The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) will participate in the Neuter Scooter for a Nickel promotion on Tuesday, February 26 at The HSUS Spay/Neuter Clinic & Animal Wellness Center. The clinic is located at 4830 Village Fair Drive in Dallas. The HSUS is joined by the SPCA of Texas and 15 veterinary hospitals in the metroplex celebrating the Neuter Scooter for a Nickel.

For one nickel per cat, persons can have their male cats neutered at the clinic. Texas state law requires animals to have a rabies vaccination prior to or at the time of the surgery. Rabies vaccinations cost seven dollars. To schedule an appointment, call 214-372-9999 or 214-372-9997. The clinic will be open for surgeries starting 7:30 a.m. You must make an appointment for surgery.

"We are happy to provide the community with an opportunity to have their cat neutered, which is not only healthy for the cat, but will help to reduce the overpopulation of cats in the Dallas area," said Lou Guyton, HSUS Southwest Regional Office director.

Neutering a male reduces the risk of both prostate enlargement and prostate cancer. Neutering also will make your pet more affectionate and less likely to roam, get in fights, or become lost. It is a myth that neutering or spaying your pet will cause him or her to become fat and lazy. Pets become fat and lazy by overeating or lack of exercise, not from spaying or neutering. Sterilizing your animal will help combat the overpopulation problem prevalent across the nation. Consider the fact that in seven years, one female cat and her young can produce 420,000 kittens. The more animals that are sterilized the less there will be that will end up homeless, unwanted or euthanized.

The clinic offers subsidized spay/neuter surgeries and will perform about 40 per day or 8,000 to 10,000 such operations each year. In future months, the clinic will offer counseling to Dallas-area pet owners who are struggling with pet behavior problems, as a part of The HSUS' Pets for Life campaign, whose aim is to keep people and their pets together.
