B&GCA Accepts Applications to Establish Clubs in Public Housing

Boys & Girls Clubs of America (B&GCA) is pleased to announce the availability of pass-through funding to support the expansion and enhancement of services to youth who are residents of public housing and housing assisted under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA) of 1996. This funding is part of a $1,995,600 project funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide training, technical assistance, program development, and pass-through grants to local Boys & Girls Club organizations in support of new Club start-ups and outreach initiatives. Some key points:

- B&GCA is accepting applications through May 10, 2002.

- Local, B&GCA-chartered Boys & Girls Club organizations are eligible to apply for pass-through funding under this grant.

- Eligible projects will involve "Clubs in or near, and primarily serving residents of, public housing and housing assisted under the Native American Housing and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA) of 1996."

- The two types of pass-through grants available are: (1) one-time seed money grants averaging $50,000 each to assist in starting up new Clubs; and (2) outreach grants averaging $25,000 each to support membership outreach and program/service expansion.

- Local grant funds are to be applied toward direct operating, non-capital costs of the new Club or outreach program.

- Those selected to receive pass-through funds should receive letters of agreement by late spring/early summer. The grant period will run through November 30, 2003.

Local Boys & Girls Club organizations interested in applying for one of these grants should review and fully consider the information included in the document, "Eligibility, Grants Requirements, and Selection Criteria," and confer with their local housing authority, tribe, or tribally designated housing entity, prior to making a final decision on submitting an application. The application form and related information is available on bgca.net, a restricted Web site for Boys & Girls Club professionals and board volunteers.

Any local housing entity interested in these funds should contact their local Boys & Girls Club organization for details. For information purposes, a copy of the funding announcement may be requested by contacting Christopher Guadian at 404-487-5929 or cguadian@bgca.org.
