Orphaned Bears Return to the WildAnimal Protection Institute WHO: Two Orphaned Bear Cubs WHAT: The "brother bears" will be returned to the wild in Northern California now that their rehabilitation is completed. The mother of the cubs was killed after being hit by a car. WHERE: Northern California, Placer County WHEN: Tentatively Scheduled for Sunday, October 10 WHY: Rehabilitation efforts have succeeded and the cubs are ready to return to the wild. Found in late Spring, each bear now weighs about 80 lbs. and is approximately eight months old. BACKGROUND: This is the fourth collaborative bear rescue and release effort by the Animal Protection Institute (API), the HOWL Wildlife Center in Lynwood, WA and California Game and Fish. API negotiated the policy and provides a significant portion of the funding for transportation, food, veterinary care and the radio collars, which will monitor the bears following their release. Two other bears, who are currently being housed with the brother bears at the HOWL Wildlife Center in Lynwood, WA are set for release this November under the same arrangement. The bears will be featured on Animal Planet's Wildlife Emergency Program on Saturday, October 2, at 8:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
