Marine Corps Marathon runners raise more than $350,000 for St. JudeSt. Jude Children's Research Hospital (ALSAC) On Sunday Oct. 26, more than 16,000 runners from across the country lined up to run 26.2 miles around the nation's capital in the 28th running of the Marine Corps Marathon. But for about 217 runners, or St. Jude Runners, the marathon was about more than finishing. It was about helping the children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. They came from 27 states and the District of Colombia to participate in the race and helped raise more than $350,000 for the hospital founded by the late entertainer, Danny Thomas. The top fund-raiser, Michael McElroy, raised more than $20,000—the most ever raised by a runner for St. Jude in the Marine Corps Marathon. Since 1999, St. Jude has fielded a team of runners in the Marine Corps Marathon and raised more than $1.5 million to help St. Jude in its mission. It all began in 1998, when a WMZQ radio personality and two friends challenged themselves to run in the marathon, both for themselves and for St. Jude. From those original three runners, the event has grown to more than 200. And for the past few years, each race has raised enough funds to provide an entire course of treatment for a child suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer. If you missed out on this year's event, you can sign up for next year's race. Just e-mail Carrie Denning at carrie.denning@stjude.org to find out how to become a part of the fund-raising running team now called St. Jude Heroes. Participants are required to raise a minimum of $1,000 to become a St. Jude Hero and will receive the following:
If you have always wanted to run in a marathon but were looking for motivation, this is the opportunity you have been waiting for.
