The American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) has awarded a Brain Tumor Research Fellowship at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to medical student Meredith Allen.

Allen, will be mentored by Richard Gilbertson, M.D., Ph.D., of St. Jude Developmental Neurobiology. Her research project is titled "Novel Targeted Therapeutics for Brain Tumor Treatment."

This is the third summer that ABTA has sponsored a medical student to participate in the St. Jude Pediatric Oncology Education Program.

The fellowship program was created to plant the seeds of neuro-oncology interest in bright, talented students. In addition, ABTA provides free patient education and resource information to help brain tumor patients and their families understand the disease and learn about available treatment options. For more information, visit the American Brain Tumor Association.

Allen will begin her second year at Texas Tech University School of Medicine this fall. She has a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Texas at Austin.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tennessee, St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization.
