AmeriCares Action For Africa: An Appeal For FundsAmeriCares Foundation AmeriCares has issued an appeal for funds to support an initiative to alleviate a medical and food crisis that endangers huge segments of the population in Africa. The program, called "AmeriCares Action For Africa, ties together construction of a therapeutic feeding center with six months of airlifts and sea cargoes of medicine and nutritional supplements. December 15 is the target for the first airlift. As many as 30 million people in seven African nations are considered at risk by a catastrophic food shortage superimposed on an HIV/AIDS pandemic and a chronically inadequate health care structure. The emergency relief is designated for Ethiopia, Malawi and Zimbabwe. In addition to pharmaceuticals such as amoxicillin and doxycycline, the shipments include multi-vitamins, nutritional supplements and IV solutions. In Malawi, the feeding center is to be located at the Malamulo Hospital near the Mozambique border in a 30-foot-by-60-foot building provided by Sprung Instant Structure of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. A fact-finding mission from AmeriCares toured hospitals and clinics in the region this fall. They met with representatives of the UN and nonprofit and government agencies on the ground there. The team included Dr. Kim Pham, AmeriCares medical consultant, and Dr. Patrick Broderick, AmeriCares volunteer and chief of emergency medicine at Connecticut's Danbury Hospital. AmeriCares is marking its 20th year as a humanitarian aid and disaster relief organization, delivering more than $2.6 billion in assistance in 137 countries without regard to race, creed or political orientation.
