100% of the money to go to the victims' families

AmeriCares, the non-profit disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization, has announced that the first installment of its Heroes' Fund has been distributed to the immediate families of the uniformed officials who perished on September 11th.

AmeriCares transferred the administrative responsibilities of the distribution to Mayor Giuliani's Twin Towers Fund before Thanksgiving, with a guarantee from the Mayor that 100% of the money will be going to the victims' families. Not one penny was taken out for administrative purposes. AmeriCares secured PricewaterhouseCoopers to audit the process, to ensure that the transaction was completed in an accurate and expedient fashion.

"These brave men and women lost their lives so that others could live. AmeriCares is honored to have collected funds on their behalf," stated Bob Macauley. "We hope that this money will aid in covering some of the financial expenses that will continue to burden the surviving families."

The $4 million disbursement is the first installment of money from the Heroes' Fund. As the fund will be closing on January 31, 2002, there will be one additional installment.
