Medical Donation to be used at all three clinics

AmeriCares, the international and national disaster relief organization, is pleased to announce that its subsidiary AmeriCares Free Clinics, has received a generous donation from Pfizer, a global pharmaceutical company. The donation, valued at over $35,000, consists of a diverse selection of prescription drugs for many clinic patients throughout Connecticut.

"AmeriCares is able to achieve such remarkable results because of contribution like this from the corporate sector," says Karen Gottlieb, Executive Director for AmeriCares. "AmeriCares Free Clinics has been successful in capturing the extraordinary generosity of community members including volunteers, financial contributors and donors of inkind services."

"At Pfizer, we believe that one indicator of our performance is our ability to enhance the vitality of the communities where we live and work. We are pleased to partner with fine organizations like AmeriCares' through our volunteer and philanthropic efforts," says Chuck Hardwick, Pfizer's Vice President, Government and Public Affairs.

In 1997, the Southeastern Mobile Clinic received a significant cash donation from Pfizer, which helped defray the initial set-up costs. Both Pfizer and its employees share AmeriCares' vision of providing access to quality healthcare to the uninsured and underinsured residents of southeastern Connecticut. Twelve employees of Pfizer's Global Research and Development facility in Groton are in fact volunteers at the clinic. Four physicians volunteer their time and expertise along with seven registered nurses.

Pfizer Inc, the world's largest pharmaceutical company, discovers, develops, manufactures and markets leading prescription medicines, for humans and animals, and many of the world's best known over-the-counter brands. This year, Pfizer expects global sales of more than $31 billion and has a research and development budget of $4.7 billion. The company's global research headquarters is in New London, CT.

The mission of AmeriCares Free Clinics is to provide healthcare to uninsured and underinsured residents in a setting where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect. The intention is to help those who are making a sincere effort to help themselves and their families, but who do not have the financial resources for medical care. The clinics are staffed primarily by volunteer board certified doctors and registered nurses who deliver outpatient health care to the community. There are currently three clinic programs; Norwalk opened in 1994 and Danbury in January of 1997. In Southeastern Connecticut a mobile medical unit serves as the venue for weekly sessions at predetermined sites in Groton, New London and Norwich. AmeriCares Free Clinics accepts only private funding, and all donations designated for the Southeastern Connecticut Mobile Clinic will help defray the cost of delivering healthcare to under and uninsured individuals in this area.
