Beginners Nature Program Helping AmeriCares Plant Hope in HaitiAmeriCares Foundation New Canaan AdvertiserChildren enrolled in the Beginners Nature Program at the New Canaan Nature Center recently completed a successful seed drive on behalf of AmeriCares. Two hundred packets of vegetable seeds donated by the children will be included in the next AmeriCares' shipment of medicine, medical equipment and nutritional supplements to Haiti.Marea Dumbauld, parent and AmeriCares volunteer, presented the project to the nature Center. Priscilla Woyke, director of the Nature Center Nursery School, and Anne Harper, director of the Nature Center, supported the project and encouraged the children.AmeriCares developed the project after receiving a special request from the Center for Development in Haiti to assist farmers in the northwest region of the country. According to AmeriCares Account Executive Kevin Clemens, there are approximately 5,000 farmers, each with up to one acre of land, who do not have the money needed to buy vegetable seeds.  "By growing vegetables," Mr. Clemens said, "the farmers will be able to feed their families and sell produce in the marketplace. Our hope is that the seed project will become an annual tradition in New Canaan and other towns in Fairfield County."
