ASPCA Responds to Inaccurate Reports of WTC Pets OrphanedAmerican Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ASPCA has received no credible information to support this claim from any of the major animal welfare groups in the Tri-State area. The ASPCA is aware of inaccurate information being reported by national news media organizations indicating that as a result of the September 11 tragedy, there are "hundreds of pets left orphaned and in need of homes." The ASPCA has received no credible information to support this claim from any of the major animal welfare groups in the Tri-State area. To date, the ASPCA has received approximately 15 cats and dogs who were tragically left without owners following the September 11 tragedy. In addition, 30 pets were placed with the ASPCA for temporary foster care by owners who had lost their homes as a result of the disaster. The ASPCA is grateful to all those who have come forward to offer their assistance to foster or adopt orphaned animals.
