Slot machine gambling would bolster cruel industry.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) urges Colorado voters to reject a ballot measure that would legalize thousands of slot machines at dog tracks statewide. Amendment #33, which is being promoted by the British-based company Wembley Plc, will go before voters on November 4.

In the past two years, the ASPCA, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and GREY2K USA have worked together to successfully defeat attempts to legalize slot machines at greyhound racetracks in Massachusetts, Florida, Kansas, and Arizona. In the coming weeks, the groups plan on launching a grassroots campaign against Amendment #33. The three animal welfare organizations have more than 120,000 members and constituents in Colorado.

"Dog racing is a cruel industry that results in the death of thousands of greyhounds each year. This so-called 'sport' should not be propped up with slot machine profits," said Jill Buckley, Government Affairs Associate, Western Region, for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). "Voters should reject this brazen attempt by wealthy racetrack owners to cash in on cruelty."
