ASPCA Remembers Former ASPCA President Dr. John KullbergAmerican Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Dr. John Kullberg passes away after a long battle with cancer. Dr. John Kullberg, a true visionary in the animal protection field, passed away on April 20, 2003 after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Kullberg served as president of the American Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) for 14 years (1978-1991). "It is with great sadness that the ASPCA marks the passing of John Kullberg," said Stephen J. Musso, Acting President of the ASPCA. "Dr. Kullberg was a well-respected and visionary leader in the animal protection field and will be greatly missed by all of us who have the best interest of animals in our heart." Most recently, Dr. Kullberg was the guiding force and first Executive Director of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) Wildlife Land Trust. The Trust is the only national land trust that provides a permanent sanctuary to wildlife and allows no hunting, trapping, or other activities that would be harmful to animals. The land includes over 60,000 acres of refuge to animals in 21 states and four nations. Dr. Kullberg served as a member on the board of directors of the ASPCA, The American Humane Association (AHA), the Farm Animal Reform Movement, and The New York State Humane Association. Additionally, he served as board chairman for the National Coalition to Protect Our Pets and board president for the Society for Animal Protective Legislation. John is survived by Karol, his wife of 23 years, and their three children Kathryn, Kristen and Evan. The family has requested that donations honoring Dr. Kullberg be made to the HSUS or to the John Kullberg Memorial Fund at the HSUS Wildlife Land Trust.
