Paul Bremer, the Bush administration's chief administrator for Iraq, met today with staff from the American Refugee Committee in Al-Amara, in southeastern Iraq. Bremer was visiting the area to survey the work of humanitarian organizations such as ARC.

"We're thrilled to have had the opportunity to describe our work to Mr. Bremer," remarked Alan Waller, ARC's interim head of office. "He was genuinely pleased at our progress and promised to provide whatever support he could for our operations."

The British Army's top commanders for the Maysan province also attended the meetings, which for security reasons were held at the home of the provincial governor.

The American Refugee Committee is currently completing ten "quick impact projects" in Al-Amara and elsewhere in the Maysan province, providing much needed water, sanitation, and reconstruction support to the region. ARC is in the process of beginning 14 more projects that include school reconstruction and waste collection.

For nearly 25 years, the American Refugee Committee has been working to ease the suffering of the victims of war around the world. The American Refugee Committee is a nonpartisan, nonprofit humanitarian relief organization that works for the survival, health and well-being of refugees and displaced persons caught in the crossfire of civil violence, warfare, and other disasters.
