The American Refugee Committee has been deeply saddened by the recent death of Senator Paul Wellstone, his wife Sheila and daughter Marcia, and the four other victims of the tragic plane crash. "Senator Wellstone was a friend to humanitarian causes, an ally in the fight against poverty and disease around the world," said ARC President Hugh Parmer. "His understanding of the global community earned the respect of so many people in congress."

Parmer recently praised Senator Wellstone for co-sponsoring a bill to increase U.S. funding of initiatives to combat HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria, including $2.2 billion for the United Nation's Global Fund. "Senator Wellstone really understood the importance of working on behalf of the world's most vulnerable people. We will truly miss him," continued Parmer.
