Northwesterners Reach Out to Afghan RefugeesWorld Concern Yesterday's kick off of Seattle-based World Concern's relief campaign for Afghan refugees brought in many calls from throughout the community of Northwesterners wanting to help. People were calling to donate money, to find out how to get their churches, schools and youth groups involved in Hygiene SHARE Kit collections, and to volunteer their time to sort items at World Concern's Supply Center in Lynnwood. World Concern's relief director, Mr. Kelly Miller, stated, "It's encouraging to see the community here rallying to help Afghan families. People seem to really understand that the people of Afghanistan are not the enemy. They didn't elect the Taliban, rather they are suffering greatly under the Taliban rule. Women and children are in desperate need of help right now. Without it, millions are at risk of starvation." Hygiene kits include items such as soap, washcloths, toothbrushes, and combs – simple items that bring hope and help prevent the spread of disease. They are one part of World Concern's relief effort that includes food, shelter, and blanket distribution as well. So what is the greatest need? As usual, the greatest need is for cash donations to purchase supplies, but the Hygiene SHARE Kits allow World Concern to deliver into the families' hands a little piece of hope for future as well. The kits might be one of the first few possessions a refugee family will own after suffering the loss of everything dear to them.
