AIDS: One Country's SuccessWorld Concern From 25 to 27 June 2001, the United Nations General Assembly will convene in New York for a special session on HIV/AIDS to intensify international action. While AIDS has been devastating in Africa, the Caribbean, and many other regions, Thailand is one of the few countries making considerable progress in reducing the rate of transmission of AIDS among the general population. Still, AIDS continues to be a challenge there especially among high-risk populations. Scott Coats, World Concern's Thailand Country Manager, has been working in Thailand since 1985 and has noticed a change in the focus of organizations working with HIV/AIDS: "Ten years ago, World Concern and other organizations focused on awareness raising among high-risk groups. Now, as the disease has progressed, the response has been to focus more on how to help family members meet their own needs and adjust to the loss of husbands, wives, moms and dads." World Concern has the following resources available on their News & Resources web page at www.worldconcern.org for journalists interested in AIDS in Thailand: - Summaries of World Concern projects, which include supporting children affected by AIDS, promoting AIDS awareness, assisting families to generate income, and providing healthcare and support to families and marginalized, high risk groups. - Email interview with World Concern's Thailand Country Manager, Scott Coats, on the topic of AIDS. - Personal stories of families dealing with AIDS, who are involved in World Concern projects in Thailand. World Concern, a non-profit Christian organization headquartered in Seattle, Washington, is engaged in relief and development programs serving the poor in 27 nations globally. In recent years, the AIDS epidemic has stunned many of the communities throughout Africa and Asia where World Concern works.
