Pringles Brand Commits Funds and Advertising; Trade Group Urges Others to Do the Same

In response to unprecedented devastation from tornadoes this spring, the Pringles brand of snacks will make a contribution to the American Red Cross valued at more than $2 million in cash and advertising. For each medium-sized can of Pringles purchased during the month of July, a 5 cent donation up to $250,000 will benefit the severely depleted Disaster Relief Fund. Procter & Gamble, parent company of Pringles Brand, also supported the disaster relief effort with $100,000 in cash and over $300,000 worth of relief supplies.

"If you think about the Disaster Relief Fund as a tank of gas, we are literally running on fumes," said Marsha Evans, President and CEO of the American Red Cross. "Pringles is truly helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies by giving to the Disaster Relief Fund."

The Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund makes it possible to provide relief for disaster victims anywhere, anytime, regardless of cost, the community's ability to support relief services or media coverage. The Fund is at a critical low of less than $5 million, down from $68 million one year ago. Especially now, in a hurricane season that began June 1 and lasts until November, it is critical the fund be prepared for storms that develop suddenly with devastating effects. Without additional support, just one major disaster, like a hurricane, could literally wipe the fund out.

A.G. Lafley, Chairman, President and Chief Executive of the Procter & Gamble Company announced the Pringles donation, which includes both dollars and over $2 million in advertising time, following the multiple tornadoes that ravaged several states in the Midwest in May. Among the hardest hit communities was Jackson, Tennessee, where nine people were killed and hundreds left homeless. Jackson is also home to the Pringles North American manufacturing facility, which was also severely damaged.

"The food and beverage industry has always been a supporter of the Red Cross and now is no exception," said C. Manly Molpus, President and CEO of the Grocery Manufacturers of America (GMA). "With Hurricane Season upon us and more costly disasters ahead, support for the Red Cross from our industry is more important than ever. Our members' products touch the lives of millions of Americans everyday, just like the Red Cross does, and you can expect our partnership to grow stronger in this critical time of need."
