Washington, DC - June 27, 2001 - UCP, one of the nation's largest non-profit disability organizations, has endorsed bills to be introduce today by Sen. Robert G. Torricelli (D-NJ) and Rep. Phil English (R-PA) to provide a tax credit up to $2,000 annually for expenses incurred for therapies to aid children with development disabilities.

The tax credit would be refundable and thus available to families with little or no taxable incomes, and would apply to costs of rehabilitative therapies, assistive communications for speech or hearing disabilities, and to any other supports specified by the IRS in consultation with the Department of Health and Human Services. The credit would begin in 2002 and would be indexed in the future to account for inflation. UCP is pleased to join autism associations, other disability groups, and TV's "West Wing" star Brad Whitford in strongly supporting this important legislation.

UCP was founded in 1949 and has 119 affiliates nationwide. UCP provides programs and services to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of children and adults with cerebral palsy and other disabilities and their families. UCP uses its funds efficiently, with 85 cents of every dollar spent directly on programs and services.
