Lung Association Applauds Delaware Governor For Signing Nation's Toughest Smoking-Control LawAmerican Lung Association Statement by John L. Kirkwood, President and CEO, American Lung Association Every man, woman and child living in and visiting Delaware can breathe a bit easier now that Gov. Ruth Ann Minner has signed legislation giving her state the toughest, most protective smoking-control law in the nation. Delaware's comprehensive new law goes beyond any other law in the country by banning smoking in bars, casinos, taverns, restaurants, health care facilities, schools (public and non-public), bowling alleys, billiard and pool halls, gaming facilities open to the public, and all common-use public areas such as hallways, restrooms and hotel lobbies. By prohibiting smoking in most indoor workplaces, Delaware will protect employees who previously were exposed to secondhand smoke while on the job. The law also will protect children, who are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. Gov. Minner and the state legislature are to be congratulated for placing public health above the private, money-driven interests of the tobacco industry. Delaware may be a small state, but it has taken a very big step toward improving public health. Delaware's action should serve as a model for other states. The American Lung Association® has been fighting lung disease for nearly 100 years. With the generous support of the public and the help of volunteers, we have seen many advances against lung disease. However, our work is not finished. As we look forward to our second century, we will continue to strive to make breathing easier for everyone through programs of education, community service, advocacy, and research. The American Lung Association®'s activities are supported by donations to Christmas Seals® and other voluntary contributions.
