Tobacco Company's Whines of Protest Prove Truth Campaign To Curb Teen Smoking Is WorkingAmerican Lung Association Statement of John L. Kirkwood, President and CEO, American Lung Association® The American Lung Association® strongly denounces Lorillard Tobacco Company for threatening litigation to end the American Legacy Foundation's effective "truth" advertising campaign, which is aimed at preventing our nation's children from smoking. Lorillard makes Newport cigarettes, which are very popular among youth and is the preferred brand among African-American teens. Lorillard's action clearly confirms the success of the "truth" campaign. What clearer indication is needed than the pitiful whines of protest from Big Tobacco? Lorillard, like other big tobacco companies, piously says it does not want children to smoke. Now they are taking direct steps to derail a program that is successfully working to keep kids away from cigarettes. Why? Because "truth" is working. A recent federal government report shows a sharp decline in youth smoking rates and cites the "truth" ad campaign as one reason for the encouraging numbers. Lorillard's motive couldn't be more transparent. They are afraid of the truth. Truly effective anti-smoking campaigns will mean fewer young smokers and fewer dollars in Lorillard's coffers. The American Lung Association® has been fighting lung disease for nearly 100 years. With the generous support of the public and the help of volunteers, we have seen many advances against lung disease. However, our work is not finished. As we look forward to our second century, we will continue to strive to make breathing easier for everyone through programs of education, community service, advocacy, and research. The American Lung Association®'s activities are supported by donations to Christmas Seals® and other voluntary contributions.
