Samaritan's Purse Aids Kentucky Flood VictimsSamaritan's Purse Disaster Relief Unit Brings Equipment, Expertise and Mobilizes Volunteers to Help Local Kentucky Communities A tractor-trailer rig loaded with emergency supplies from international relief organization Samaritan's Purse is bringing help to the flood-ravaged communities of Kentucky. The Samaritan's Purse Disaster Relief Unit is staffed by experienced aid workers who are guiding local church teams as they clean and repair flooded houses. The unit arrived last Thursday, and the first teams of volunteers began work over the weekend. According to Harlan County officials, more than 200 houses were damaged or destroyed along the Cumberland River and its tributaries. Many of the displaced families do not have flood insurance or the resources to restore their homes. Some may not be able to wait for federal assistance, but many may be able to salvage or repair their houses if they are cleaned and dried promptly. The Disaster Relief Unit is stocked with pumps, generators, tools, and a variety of emergency equipment and supplies. Samaritan's Purse maintains two tractor-trailers to provide immediate response to disasters in the United States. The relief organization helped repair or salvage hundreds of homes following Hurricane Floyd in North Carolina, flooding in Texas, and tornadoes in Oklahoma and Georgia. Samaritan's Purse is an international Christian relief organization based in Boone, N.C., and headed by Franklin Graham, the son of evangelist Billy Graham. Samaritan's Purse works in some 100 countries around the world, helping victims of disaster, war, poverty, disease, famine, and persecution. In 2001 and 2000, Samaritan's Purse was recognized by SmartMoney magazine as the most efficient religious charity in the United States.
