After Five Weeks in Las Vegas, Mongolian Children Leave on Thursday with a Second Chance at LifeSamaritan's Purse Six-year-old Usukhbayar Baasandorj and 4-year-old Naranjargal Oyun-Erdene are on the mend and will soon be on their way home to Mongolia, after receiving life-saving heart surgery at Sunrise Children's Hospital in Las Vegas. Unable to get the medical care they needed in their home country, the children were brought to Las Vegas by Samaritan's Purse, the international Christian relief organization led by Franklin Graham, son of Rev. Billy Graham. After a five-week stay with a local family in Las Vegas, the children will return home to Mongolia Thursday morning. There is only one pediatric cardiologist in the entire country of Mongolia, which has a population of 2.2 million. In the past year, Samaritan's Purse has equipped this doctor with an echocardiogram machine and provided additional training to help children like Oyun-Erdene and Baasandorj. The Samaritan's Purse Children's Heart project started in 1997 in response to a critical need in Bosnia. Since then, the project has brought more than 120 children to the United States for life-saving heart treatment. In addition to medical care, Samaritan's Purse provides state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and training for doctors overseas. The machines enable doctors to better diagnose defects, identify candidates for surgery, and ensure that the children are matched with the proper specialists in the U.S.
