The American Kidney Fund's (AKF) Chairman of Medical Affairs will meet with the Congressional Black Caucus Thursday, September 27 in the Longworth House Office Building at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Paul W. Crawford, MD, will discuss the high incidence of kidney disease among African Americans and AKF's efforts to address the problem.

African Americans make up about 12% of the U.S. population, but account for more than a third of those who have kidney failure. The disparity is due, in part, to the fact that African Americans have especially high rates of hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes, the two leading causes of kidney failure. The only treatments for kidney failure are dialysis or transplantation.

AKF's African American Outreach Program provides effective strategies for the prevention of kidney disease, as well as screening for kidney disease at churches, health fairs, and community events
