September 11th Tragedy

The staff and board of the New Israel Fund send their heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of the victims of the recent terrorist attacks. In the minutes and hours after these incomprehensibly destructive acts, we all found ourselves reaching out instinctively to those we love. As we prepare for the New Year, it is a powerful reminder of the value we place on human life and on the bonds that hold us together as a community.

As we come to grips with the new reality, let us focus first and foremost on what it is that separates us from terrorists. Because it is not our skin color, our religion, or our nationality - it is our morality, our value for life and concern and respect for others.

That is how these acts should be viewed. Not just an attack on America, but an attack against those of us who would deny terrorism a role in determining our futures. It is our hope that we will remember what we have learned about tolerance and co-existence in the days to come, and continue to work together to bring peace to our world. September 13, 2001
