Justice Kennedy Reigns Supreme

National Youth Leadership Forum

WASHINGTON, D.C. – It was a rare and spectacular meeting for 350 high school students attending the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law (NYLF/LAW) today as they held court, so to speak, with Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy. Justice Kennedy shared some of the history of the Supreme Court with NYLF/LAW and provided an overview of the oral argument process in the courtroom.

He told the students, "The power the Supreme Court has come from the respect people give to our decisions. We get respect if we explain the processes, conclusions and train of thought." Kennedy called the U.S. Constitution one of the most brilliant documents in Western thought and added, "It will soon fall to you to become the trustees of that document. It passes from my hands to yours. That is why you are here in Washington, D.C."
