American Presidents Speak: What Israel Means to MeAmerican Jewish Committee In a full-page ad in today's New York Times the American Jewish Committee clearly spells out the history of unwavering American presidential support for the state of Israel. "My administration will be steadfast in supporting Israel against terrorism and violence, and in seeking the peace for which all Israelis pray," says President George W. Bush in the AJC ad, "What Israel Means to Me." The ad traces presidential support for Israel by every president since the establishment of the state in 1948. "I had faith in Israel before it was established, I have faith in it now," said President Harry S. Truman. Stressing the shared values and vision of the U.S. and Israel, a note sounded consistently by the presidents, Truman went on to say Israel "has a glorious future before it – not just another sovereign nation, but as an embodiment of the great ideals of our civilization." Marking Israel's 54th birthday this month the AJC ad points out that "in every administration the President has spoken eloquently of the importance of a secure Israel to America's vital national interests." The ad also will appear in The New Republic and the New York Jewish Week. "In Israel, free men and women are every day demonstrating the power of courage and faith," said President Ronald Reagan. "Back in1948 when Israel was founded, pundits claimed the new country could never survive. Today, no one questions that Israel is a land of stability and democracy in a region of tyranny and unrest."
