American Jewish Committee Donates $50,000 to United Nations to Aid Afghan RefugeesAmerican Jewish Committee American Jewish Committee Executive Director David A. Harris today presented a $50,000 contribution to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Ruud Lubbers, for the agency's relief programs in Afghanistan. "We are confident that these funds will be used to provide needed aid to Afghan refugees as they seek to rebuild their lives with the indispensable assistance of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees," said Mr. Harris, who traveled to Geneva to deliver the donation. Joining Mr. Harris at the meeting with High Commissioner Ruud Lubbers was Andrew Srulevitch, executive director of the Geneva-based UN Watch, an affiliate of the American Jewish Committee. Today's contribution is the second major donation from the American Jewish Committee to the important work of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and also the second time AJC has worked with the UN agency to help Muslim refugees. In July 1999, AJC supported the agency's relief efforts for Kosovar refugees. "As the book of Deuteronomy enjoins us to comfort those who are afflicted, so, too, we aim through this contribution to bring aid to those in need," said Mr. Harris.
