American Jewish Committee Applauds President Bush For State of the Union Reference to 'Axis of Evil'

American Jewish Committee has congratulated President Bush on his "powerful" State of the Union address and applauded his call for "national unity, purpose, and resolve." AJC was especially pleased by the President's "forceful reference to the 'axis of evil' (Iran, Iraq, and North Korea) that threatens civilized societies everywhere."

The full text of the congratulatory letter to President Bush from AJC President Harold Tanner and AJC Executive Director David A. Harris follows:

Dear Mr. President:

On behalf of the American Jewish Committee, we wish to congratulate you on your powerful State of the Union Address.

Indeed, as you so eloquently stated last night, we are confident, that with unswerving American power, perseverance, and principle, we will witness "freedom's victory."

We applaud your call for national unity, purpose, and resolve, and we were especially pleased to hear your forceful reference to the "axis of evil" that threatens civilized societies everywhere.

As long as Iran, Iraq, and North Korea continue their relentless pursuit of weapons of mass destruction, assistance to terrorist groups, and suppression of human rights, the world cannot be safe. We steadfastly support your laudable efforts to ensure that these states do not succeed in their malevolent aims.
