AJC Letter to Rep. Darrell IssaAmerican Jewish Committee American Jewish Committee President Harold Tanner and Executive Director David A. Harris sent the following letter today to Rep. Darrell Issa, one of the alleged targets in a JDL terror plot condemned by AJC. December 13, 2001 The Honorable Darrell Issa Dear Representative Issa: The members, staff and supporters of the American Jewish Committee across the United States join us in expressing to you our shock and disgust over the alleged terror plot that a fringe group, the so-called Jewish Defense League, is accused of fomenting against a number of targets in Southern California, including one of your district offices. As our Los Angeles Director, Rabbi Gary Greenebaum, made clear in his statement of solidarity yesterday, and as our Director of Government and Interna-tional Affairs, Jason Isaacson, reiterated in his meeting with your staff this afternoon in Washington, AJC utterly rejects terrorism – by any group and for any purpose. We are especially pained and horrified by the notion that any of our fellow American Jews might plan or condone acts of terror – for such wanton lawlessness is so clearly contrary to the fundamental tenets of our faith, and to the basic principles of justice and liberty that brought our parents and grandparents to America's shores and that form the bedrock of our national values. The alleged plot on your office would have done violence to these tenets and principles, and meets with the contempt of our members and, we are confident, of the Jewish community as a whole. We celebrate the law enforcement work that stopped this alleged terror plot before damage could be done, and we look forward to our continuing work with you and your staff on the important policy issues that confront our nation at this critical time. With the assurance of our friendship, and our best wishes to you and your staff for the holidays and the New Year, we remain, Respectfully, Harold Tanner, President
