American Jewish Committee Outraged by Palestinian Assassination of Israeli MinisterAmerican Jewish Committee The American Jewish Committee has strongly condemned the assassination of Israel's Tourism Minister, Rehavam Ze'evi, a despicable act for which the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine claimed credit. "This latest Palestinian outrage inevitably raises pointed questions about Yasser Arafat's authority, the Palestinian commitment to peace, and Arafat's willingness to confront the terror organizations in his midst," said David A. Harris, executive director of the American Jewish Committee. "A year ago, the Israeli government made a far-reaching offer to the Palestinians that could have led through negotiations to a resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," said Mr. Harris. "Arafat's reply came with the launching in September 2000 of a calculated new Palestinian campaign of violence and terror. Today's assassination of Minster Ze'evi surely must be seen as a direct consequence of this Palestinian campaign."
