Harris today commended Mayor Rudolph Giuliani for his "inspiring and courageous leadership" in mobilizing the city's emergency services after terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center's twin towers. "More than anything else, New Yorkers relied on your clear mind, steady hand, and strong voice today, as we faced devastation unparalleled in history," AJC President Harold Tanner and Executive Director David A. Harris wrote to Mayor Giuliani.  "The American Jewish Committee stands with you during these extraordinarily difficult ties," wrote the AJC leaders. "We are ready to assist you and the people of New York in every possible way." The full text of the American Jewish Committee letter to Mayor Giuliani follows: Dear Mayor Giuliani: On behalf of the American Jewish Committee, we join with you in expressing profound grief on this most tragic day in American history and in mourning the many victims of the heinous and deadly terror attacks committed in this city and country. We wish to express our deep and abiding appreciation for the inspiring and courageous leadership that you have shown. Your immediate mobilization of all of the city's emergency resources and coordination of their services helped bring an unprecedented situation under control. And we cannot say enough good things about the Herculean efforts of the city's policemen, firemen, and other emergency workers. More than anything else, New Yorkers relied on your clear mind, steady hand, and strong voice today, as we faced devastation unparalleled in history. This act of war is a rallying call for Americans to unite, to come together as never before to confront the scourge of international terrorism that challenges our nation and the democratic way of life.
