The American Jewish Committee today presented its Congressional Leadership Award to Senator Joseph I. Lieberman (D-CT), honoring his leadership during 13 years with the Senate.

"At each turn in the legislative road, Senator Lieberman has been committed to certain guiding principles that inform his decisions -- the same principles AJC cherishes," said Al Moses, AJC Honorary President, before presenting the award to the Senator. "They are a blend of the best in the American political experiment that has brought together a disparate people to create and preserve a nation that is the envy of the world."

The first Jew to run for Vice President, Lieberman co-sponsored both the Persian Gulf Resolution and the International Religious Freedom Act, has been a staunch advocate for Israel and vigorously advocated for educational reform.

"In my extraordinary opportunities, I stand on the shoulders of generations of Americans who have gone before me," said Senator Lieberman. "AJC has played a central role in giving me shoulders to stand on in its 95 years of fighting for security for Jews in America and throughout the world, in advocating principles not only for the betterment of American Jews, but also for the entire American community."
