American Jewish Committee Reacts to Israel Election ResultsAmerican Jewish Committee Israeli voters have spoken, demonstrating once again that democracy roars in this tiny corner of the Middle East. Clearly, the Israeli people have expressed their concern about the hatred, insecurity, and violence they have faced since Palestinian demonstrations and armed attacks re-erupted last year, and look to a new government to restore a measure of safety and security. The American Jewish Committee looks forward to working with Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon as he seeks to realize security for the people of Israel and durable peace in the Middle East. Peace can only be achieved when all parties are ready to make the difficult decisions, commitments and compromises. Israel's successive democratically elected governments time and again have proven that readiness. We once again call on the Palestinian leadership to assume the responsibility for peaceful coexistence with Israel. Additionally, we call upon leaders of Arab states who are forces of moderation in the region to extend a hand of cooperation to the new prime minister in the quest for peace and development in the Middle East. The Board of Governors of the American Jewish Committee, the national policy-making body of the organization, arrived in Israel today for its annual institute. Its officers and members extend best wishes to the new prime minister of Israel for a successful tenure. We also look forward to continuing to work with the Israeli government and people on the efforts to reinforce further U.S.-Israel strategic relations, broadening support for Israel worldwide and deepening ties between American Jews and Israelis.
