The American Jewish Committee today applauded Yahoo's decision to ban the sale of items associated with groups promoting hatred and violence.

"Yahoo has taken a responsible first step in the fight against hate on the Internet," said Bruce M. Ramer, president of the American Jewish Committee.

Over a year ago AJC, in its ground-breaking publication Hate and the Internet, declared that companies doing business on the Internet have a moral obligation to use their own "First Amendment rights to proclaim [they] will not help promote bigotry."

"While Yahoo's action will not end Internet bigotry, it will help establish an important principle: Internet companies have a responsibility to take reasonable steps to insure that their services are not being used by hate groups for their nefarious purposes," Mr. Ramer stated.
