The deadly terrorist bombing in the Israeli town of Hadera proves beyond any doubt that Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's reported calls to end the violence are nothing more than hollow rhetoric, the American Jewish Committee said today.

"Since Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat spurned Israel's outstretched hand for peace, and decided to unleash the senseless tragic violence two months ago, we have hoped that Arafat would assume the responsibility for peace, bring an end to the violence and return to negotiations where the conflict can be resolved," said Bruce M. Ramer, president of the American Jewish Committee.

"Arafat's reported calls to end the violence are nothing more than hollow rhetoric," said Shulamit Bahat, acting executive director of the American Jewish Committee. "The despicable terrorist bombing today in Hadera, as well as the deadly attack on an Israeli school bus in Gaza on Monday, are the results of the Palestinian Authority's continuing incitement to hatred and violence, and moreover, of Arafat's release from Palestinian jails terrorists from Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other organizations."
