The American Jewish Committee expressed today its profound disappointment in Egypt's recalling its ambassador to Israel. The full text of the AJC statement follows:

"The American Jewish Committee is profoundly disappointed that Egypt, an anchor of Arab-Israeli peace for more than two decades, has acted against the cause of peace by recalling its ambassador to Israel.

"Egypt's action is symbolic; the recall of Ambassador Bassiouny 'for consultations' does not affect Israel's embassy in Cairo, and does not break diplomatic relations between the two countries. But the symbolism of President Mubarak's decision is wholly negative and shortsighted, representing acquiescence to the forces of militant rejectionism at the expense of the region's long-term interest in stable relations and political and economic cooperation.

"Egypt's action is also a blow to the United States, mediator of Egyptian-Israeli peace and the provider to Cairo of billions of dollars in military and economic aid intended to enhance stability in the eastern Mediterranean. We fear that today's decision by President Mubarak poses new threats to that stability.

"We urge President Mubarak to reverse this step, break with -- rather than bow to -- the forces of rejectionism, and return to the policy he has pursued in the past, as a partner of the United States and Israel in the achievement of regional stability and peace."
