Rabbi Laurence L. Edwards has been named Associate Director of Interreligious Affairs at the American Jewish Committee.

Rabbi Edwards has worked with AJC's Midwest Regional Office for more than two years on the American Jewish Committee's pioneering initiative, the Catholic-Jewish Educational Enrichment Program. In that capacity he frequently visits Catholic high schools to teach about Judaism.

In his new role as Associate Director for AJC nationally, Rabbi Edwards will work from Chicago to expand AJC's efforts in interreligious affairs.

"Chicago is one of the most important cities for interreligious affairs work, and Larry's expertise and experience will be an enormous asset to our unique interreligious affairs efforts," said Shulamith Bahat, Acting Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee. "Interreligious activities in Chicago have national and international ramifications."

Before joining AJC's C/JEEP program, Rabbi Edwards served as Associate Rabbi and Director of Religious Education at K.A.M. Isaiah Israel Congregation in Chicago, and as a Hillel Director and university chaplain at Cornell University and Dartmouth College.

"Different religious traditions have much to teach each other. That is certainly something I learned in my twenty-two years of campus work. I admire AJC's devotion to serious and sustained dialogue, and hope I can make a contribution," said Rabbi Edwards.

Rabbi Edwards, ordained in 1975, completed his rabbinic studies at the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion. He received his B.A. from the University of Chicago.

He continues to serve as the rabbi for Congregation B'nai Abraham in Beloit, Wisconsin, and has been pursuing a Ph.D. at Chicago Theological Seminary.
