AJC Hails President Clinton Signing Religious Freedom LawAmerican Jewish Committee American Jewish Committee Legislative Director Richard Foltin joined with representatives of other civil rights and religious organizations in witnessing President Clinton's signing into law today the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA). The signing ceremony took place in the Oval Office. AJC hailed President Clinton's signing of this important bipartisan initiative. "This law is an important step in defending the precious religious freedom of all Americans," said Mr. Foltin. "RLUIPA will protect religious groups from discriminatory land use laws that encroach on the free exercise of their faiths, and secure the religious liberties of institutionalized persons," he added. When Congress unanimously passed RLUIPA, Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA), one of the bill's sponsors, praised the American Jewish Committee for its "indispensable role" in crafting the legislation. Senator Kennedy and other key sponsors of the legislation also were in attendance at today's signing ceremony.
