The American Jewish Committee today expressed shock and dismay at the bombing attack yesterday in Dusseldorf, Germany, which injured a group of immigrants, six of them Jewish.

"This despicable attack has the fingerprints of an anti-foreigner group's cowardly action," said David A. Harris, executive director of the American Jewish Committee, which maintains an office in Berlin. "It is cruelly ironic that the victims had just left their German language class where they had been discussing Germany's extreme-right movement."

The American Jewish Committee has close ties with the Jewish community in Germany, the German government and religious and civic leaders across the country.

"This assault is particularly shocking because Germany has welcomed with open arms tens of thousands of Jews from the former Soviet Union, adding to the rejuvenation of Jewish life, and making positive contributions to German society," said Mr. Harris. "We hope and trust that law enforcement authorities will find and prosecute the perpetrators of this evil act."
