American Jewish Committee staff is heading to the streets of New York City for community service.

"Each of us is strengthened as individuals and, ultimately, society becomes stronger, by helping those in need," said David A. Harris, executive director of the American Jewish Committee. "Community service is intrinsic to us as Jews, and to the mission of the American Jewish Committee."

On July 24, dozens of AJC staff will be volunteering at several organizations providing important humanitarian assistance, including:

- Project Ezra, a group serving the aged and poor Jewish community on the Lower East Side. AJC staff will help clean a small synagogue.

- Holy Apostle Soup Kitchen, a Chelsea facility providing over 1,000 meals per day to the homeless and poor. AJC staff will help serve the meals.

- Common Ground – The Times Square is a full support housing project assisting tenants suffering from problems ranging from mental illness to AIDS. AJC staff will help set up a flea market for a fundraising event.

- New York Blood Center: AJC staff will join with other New Yorkers donating blood to help address the severe blood shortage in the city.

Founded in 1906, the American Jewish Committee is dedicated to advancing ethnic, racial and religious understanding worldwide.
