American Jewish Committee Executive Director David A. Harris has been elected Chairman of UN Watch, a Geneva-based non-governmental organization that measures the performance of the UN system against the yardstick of the UN Charter.

Mr. Harris, who will be taking a sabbatical year from heading the AJC, will take up the UN Watch post on August 1. During his sabbatical Mr. Harris also will be a visiting scholar at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies campus in Bologna, Italy.

"It is a great honor to guide UN Watch," said Mr. Harris. "An honor because of the organization's vital work in keeping the UN honest and committed to its principles, and an honor to follow in the footsteps of Morris Abram, for UN Watch is his everlasting legacy."

UN Watch was founded in 1993 under the chairmanship of the late Ambassador Morris B. Abram, former US Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva from 1989 to 1993, and an honorary president of the American Jewish Committee.

During his ten-year tenure at the helm of the American Jewish Committee, Mr. Harris has led the 105,000 member organization in playing a unique and influential role in international diplomacy. Under his leadership AJC has developed an unparalleled network of relationships with foreign governments.

The high point of AJC's ongoing diplomatic activity is the annual "diplomatic marathon" when AJC officials meet with heads of state or foreign ministers from more than 50 countries during the opening days of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Mr. Harris will bring this extensive diplomatic and political experience to the chairmanship of UN Watch, which is located in Geneva, a major center of UN activity.

UN Watch works in affiliation with the American Jewish Committee and the World Jewish Congress.
