Felice D. Gaer, Director of the American Jewish Committee's Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights, has been elected to serve on the UN Committee Against Torture.

Ms. Gaer, who regularly consults with U.S. delegations to UN bodies, was recommended for this prestigious position by Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and supported by an overwhelming majority of countries that have signed the 1987 Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment of Punishment. The Convention has been ratified by 114 countries.

The UN Committee Against Torture, created by the UN General Assembly, consists of 10 experts "of high moral standing and recognized competence in the field of human rights" and is mandated to investigate charges of systematic torture around the world.
