The American Jewish Committee today voiced shock and deep dismay over a Mississippi school board's decision to ban a Jewish student from wearing on school property the symbol of the Jewish people.

"The Star of David is the central symbol of Judaism," said Bruce M. Ramer, president of the American Jewish Committee. "How a local school board can ban the Star of David on the specious grounds that it is some kind of 'gang symbol' is mystifying and outrageous."

The American Jewish Committee is urging the school board in Harrison County to reverse its decision to ban the Star of David.

"We will support the student, Ryan Green, if he proceeds with a plan to file suit in federal court against the school board," Mr. Ramer said.
