Deidre Berger, Former NPR Correspondent In Germany, Assumes Post At American Jewish Committee's Berlin Office

Deidre Berger, former German correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR), has been appointed Associate Managing Director of the American Jewish Committee's Berlin Office.

Commenting on the appointment, Lawrence Ramer, Chair of the Lawrence and Lee Ramer Center for German-Jewish Relations, said: "We are delighted that Deidre Berger has accepted this AJC post, one that she is uniquely qualified to fill. As a long-time and highly respected journalist and broadcaster, she has considerable experience and expertise on the German political, social and cultural scene." Eugene DuBow, Managing Director of AJC's Berlin Office, added: "We look forward to her contributions as we continue our work in this important part of the world."

Prior to her appointment, Ms. Berger was a regular speaker at conferences on German-American-Israeli relations sponsored by AJC and the Atlantic Bridge, a German organization dedicated to transatlantic relations. She has also been a contributor to the AJC's American Jewish Year Book, an annual chronicle of Jewish life in the U.S. and abroad.

For more than a decade, Ms. Berger reported from Germany and other European countries for NPR's acclaimed Morning Edition and All Things Considered. NPR, a public radio news network, is broadcast throughout the U.S. Ms. Berger also served as a special correspondent for news programs broadcast nationally through Monitor Radio. In addition, She has moderated and reported for English-language TV programs produced by Deutsche Welle, the German public network for overseas broadcasts, and for CNN's World Report. She has been a frequent political commentator on German television news programs.

For the past two years, Ms. Berger has focused her attention on print media, serving as a German correspondent for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in New York, a worldwide wire service for Jewish news, and a contributor to The Christian Science Monitor.

Ms. Berger earned her B.A. in art history from Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia and an M.A. in journalism and international affairs from the University of Missouri at Columbia. After working as a producer for National Public Radio in Washington, D.C., she moved to Cologne, Germany in 1984 on a fellowship from the Carl Duisberg Society to work with the English-language radio division of Deutsche Welle.

Since 1990, she and her husband have lived in Bad Soden, Germany. She is on the board of directors of Kehillah Chadaschah, a Jewish group in Frankfurt that was founded in 1994.
