Kenneth Bandler has been named Director of Public Relations and Communications for the American Jewish Committee.

He joins the AJC senior staff after serving for the past three and a half years as Managing Editor of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, the global news service of the Jewish people.

"It is a pleasure to welcome Ken back to AJC," said David A. Harris, AJC's Executive Director. "He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge about the Jewish community, and will be an asset to helping bring AJC into the 21st century and in preparing for our agency's centennial."

Bandler's appointment marks his return to the organization where he launched his professional career in Jewish communal life. After spending a year in Israel, working at Tel Aviv University, Bandler came to AJC's international relations department in early 1984 as a research analyst on Middle East affairs.

He moved in 1985 to the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council, where he initially worked on Israel issues and on developing a program of outreach to Jewish college students. He then served for nine years as NJCRAC's Director of Public Information.

During his tenure at NJCRAC, Bandler took a partial leave of absence to spend a year, 1989 to 1990, at Tel Aviv University's Dayan Center for Middle Eastern Studies to work on his own research project concerning Jewish-Arab relations in Israel, a subject on which he has written extensively.

His analysis of Jewish-Arab coexistence programs in Israel was published in August 1991 as part of the AJC's International Perspective series.

Since joining the JTA in July 1995, Bandler has handled media coverage of a wide array of domestic and international issues on the Jewish community's agenda.

He received his M.A. in Middle East Studies from the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies and a B.A. in International Relations from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
