The New York Chapter of the American Jewish Committee today issued the following statement:

"The American Jewish Committee is appalled by the racist float in the Board Channel Labor Day parade, and distressed by reports that two city firefighters and two city policy officers participated. We applaud the Mayor for his immediate and strong condemnation of the incident and for his promise to fire any city employee who was involved.

"The incident is a grim reminder that we still have a long way to go in exorcising the demons of racism and bigotry."
