The American Jewish Committee today dedicated a new law library and conference room at its Manhattan headquarters, named in memory of Martin Gang, a prominent attorney and longtime and devoted AJC leader.

The donation of the library and conference room was made in honor of Martin Gang by the estate of Frank G. Wells. The dedication took place during AJC's National Board of Governors Meeting.

The Martin Gang Law Library and Conference Room is on AJC's newly-renovated seventh floor. Martin Gang, a pioneer in the entertainment law industry, died on January 29, 1998 at the age of 96. Founder of the prominent Los Angeles-based law firm of Gang, Tyre, Ramer & Brown in 1931, Mr. Gang represented some of the giants in the entertainment industry such as Lucille Ball, Frank Sinatra, George Burns, Bob Hope, and numerous others. A longtime and devoted AJC leader, Mr. Gang was an Honorary AJC Vice President. He was awarded AJC's Learned Hand Award for his dedication to the Jewish community and to the betterment of all peoples. In addition, he supported many religious, educational, health and philanthropic institutions.

In the law library which bears his name there is a photo of Mr. Gang on one wall and a quotation from him on another, which reads: "John Donne wrote: 'No man is an island…' That is especially true for the Jew. Jews, for security and well-being, need community. My community has been the American Jewish Committee, a source of strength and decency on behalf of the Jewish people and the larger civic good."

Speaking at the dedication of the library, Bruce M. Ramer, AJC National President, said: "The dedication of this law library and conference center in Martin's name is of particular significance to me, both institutionally and personally. Martin was one of the most extraordinary men and attorneys I have ever met. He was my mentor, my friend, my partner, and in many ways a second father to me. My own involvement with the American Jewish Committee has been patterned after the model of Martin Gang. He was a true leader of the American Jewish Committee -- a founder of the Los Angeles Chapter and an AJC National Vice President. Most importantly, he was a devoted leader of the American Jewish community."
