The American Jewish Committee commends the Clinton Administration for the swift military action taken today on terrorist-related facilities in Afghanistan and Sudan. It was a courageous and necessary step, and one which sends a clear and unequivocal message to terrorists around the world: America will retaliate, and no country can provide safe haven.

President Clinton noted that the groups targeted for attack played a key role in the recent embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, as well as previous attacks on U.S. citizens. Today's strike was made against these known terrorists' bases of operation and their infrastructure. The U.S. decision to root out these terrorist networks where they breed can only serve to prevent further attacks against America and Americans in the future.

We, too, believe that enough is enough and that too many innocent lives have been lost to terrorism. Terrorists must know there is a high price to pay for their deadly deeds. The enemies of America and of democracy must be convinced that Americans remain ever-vigilant in our resolve to wage war against them.

As the threat of chemical weapons and other weapons of mass destruction continues to spread, we know that the battle against terrorism, in all its insidious forms, will be long and difficult. It is a fight we are determined to win.
