American Jewish Committee Supports Nato Enlargement

The American Jewish Committee supports the decision of the United States and its allies to expand membership in NATO. An enlarged NATO will mean greater security and stability and also hasten the political and economic integration of Europe.

NATO expansion not only strengthens democracy in those nations that are included in the first accession, but encourages other nations in the region who also seek membership to pursue democratic and economic reforms and to resolve their differences many of longstanding duration through peaceful means. Integration into the Western alliance can also offer real safeguards for the rights of Jews and other minority communities.

American leadership is needed to build an undivided, democratic, and peaceful Europe. On the fiftieth anniversary of the Marshall Plan that leadership continues a proud tradition. While NATO expansion is expected to cost the United States 150200 million dollars annually for the next decade, it is a small price compared to the payment in money and blood that another war in Europe would exact. The American Jewish Committee, which has been a longstanding advocate of American leadership in international affairs, will work to build support for this vital effort.
