American Jewish Committee Leaders Hold Concurrent Hearings With Members Of Congress On Wide Range Of Issues Affecting American JewryAmerican Jewish Committee Hundreds of leaders from the American Jewish Committee, gathered in Washington for AJC's 91st Annual Meeting, held concurrent hearings on Capitol Hill today with key figures in the 105th Congress to discuss critical domestic and international issues of concern to the American Jewish community. Among the topics addressed at these AJC-led hearings were: the Middle East peace process, the U.S. - Israel relationship, U.S. leadership in world affairs, international terrorism, hate crimes, church-state separation and the appropriate role of religion in public life, education, immigration and civil rights, welfare reform and campaign finance reform. Among those with whom the AJC delegations met were: Representative Howard Berman (D-CA), Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS), Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT), Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI), Representative Mark Foley (R-FL), Representative Michael Forbes (R - NY), Representative Barney Frank (D-MA), Senator Bob Graham (D-FL), Senator John Kerry (D-MA), Representative Nita Lowey (D-NY), Representative Marty Meehan (D-MA), Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Representative Major Owens (D-NY), Representative Charles Rangel (D-NY), Representative Charles Schumer (D-NY), Representative Christopher Shays (R-CT), Representative Brad Sherman (D-CA), Senator Paul Wellstone (D-MN), and Representative Ron Wyden (D-OR). In addition, AJC leaders met with a representative from the office of Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC). These legislative visits are part of AJC's ongoing outreach to Congress - both in Washington and in districts nationwide - to advocate on behalf of issues of concern to the American Jewish community. AJC's Annual Meeting continues through Friday at the Capital Hilton Hotel.
